Designing for Human Factors and Usability in High-Stress Situations
First responders encountering an unknown chemical substance face immediate challenges. For us, this meant designing for a hostile environment—where visibility is low, mobility is restricted, and high stress increases the risk of user error.
Every design decision prioritized clarity, efficiency, and reliability to support critical decision-making in the field.
From high-contrast UI testing under obscured visibility to hardware ergonomics refined for gloved operation, every aspect of this design was tested for use in challenging environments. Prototyping and material exploration ensured that critical interactions remained intuitive, even under pressure.
Operators wearing protective gloves needed precise control and clear feedback.
A high-contrast, at-a-glance UI enables operators to quickly interpret results and navigate workflows with ease.
Though highly ruggedized, the analyzer was designed to fit seamlessly into the standard cargo pocket of military pants.
